It was a pleasure to be back again at the Oxenham with its many historic features (including medieval and prehistoric) combined with modern comforts, especially the beds. It's nice that there is both a restaurant and a friendly, well-stocked bar. The owners and the staff are professional and engaging - and on this trip Simon went far out his way to help us with an unexpected emergency. Getting onto some of the best parts of the high moor, like at Belstone and Scorhill are just short trips away. It won't belong before we return.

Visited several times and as usual a great place to escape to with wonderful welcoming (and hilariously knowledgable !) host, location, history, FOOD, and room. Lovely local walks and on edge of Dartmoor for the more adventurous - the Ten Tors challenge was on that weekend so several concerned parents staying🤣🚁. Will be back again.

Wow, we only found this hotel on a general google maps hotel search, so lucky.Ancient hotel but luxuriously maintained. If you enjoy the old styles, as I do, this was a stunning place to stay.A 5000 year old Standing Menhir in the walls of the building built in 1100.The history, preservation of the beautiful building but modern comforts, foods, facilities, and wealth of local knowledge and pre-mapped walks of the surrounding Dartmoor countryside makes this worth a good week's stay.Loved it and cannot believe it is not well known.

Wow! What a lovely welcome from Lynn and Simon. As soon as we walked through the door of this historic pub we felt at home. They did everything possible to make our stay as comfortable as possible and nothing was too much trouble. John the lovely waiter/barman was great fun and had a wicked sense of humour. The food was great and we looked forward to breakfast and dinner each day. Our room (Bovey) was steeped in history and had everything we needed to make our stay special. Thanks again to Lynn and Simon, we hope to return to your lovely pub soon.Fantastico.

We slept in a room built around a huge neolithic standing stone, now embedded in the wall. Our room was first part of a 12th Century Benedictine monastery, then a 15th Century nobleman's master bedroom. The whole hotel was an astounding historical experience: we felt privileged to be able to stay there. All home comforts too, and a great dinner and breakfast. A truly unique experience.

A great short break for us away from Cornwall! Very welcoming Owners and staff. Truly interesting 12/13 the Century Building. Food was faultless in the very cosy Snug Restaurant. We did have a bit of a quite cold snap this March and despite the heating in the rooms ( with an extra electric radiator if needed ) the room we had was quite cold a lot of the time -with a building this old you can perhaps expect that.Very entertaining in the Bar in the evening and great log fires. We know most of the area fairly well but were recommended by Lynne to visit Topsham on a particularly wet and misty day and this was a good recommendation- very quaint place that I had not visited since the 70's! As well as a few of our old haunts on Dartmoor. All in all a truly great place to stay - so it deserves 5 stars.

We very much enjoyed our 3 night stay at The Oxenham Arms, The Old Inn is very atmospheric and a wonderful place to be at Christmas time. Our bedroom was lovely, the four poster bed was very comfortable. We enjoyed every meal and little could be cosier than sitting near the firewith a delicious meal in the bar of The Oxenham. The Inn is associated with legend, historical characters and some say it is haunted. It feels so very, very old. We used it as a centre to walk Dartmoor and explore the area. The staff are very friendly and we received excellent service. We went to Totnes market, Salcombe, Chagfiord, the art centre at Bovey Tracey and climbed Hound Tor. There is a lot to do. One drawback is there are no dog friendly bedrooms. If there were we would be back soon and often.

Few pubs are truly historic- the beams at Oxenham are genuine (the building is listed Grade II*) and the snug bar and lounge are decorated with photos of the many famous people who have stayed there. We arrived late and the team were hugely accommodating providing a delicious meal and looking after us well. The room was large and the huge bed very comfortable. Decidedly English plumbing (Americans take note) but if worked so no complaints there. Thoroughly recommend this charming place- you should certainly visit if you are anywhere near

The rooms are all decorated with beautiful individual colour schemes and fabulous fabrics which, I believe, are locally produced. Each room oozes history but with modern convenience. My son and I stayed three nights with Lyn and Simon and enjoyed our time at The Oxenham Arms - being blessed with unusually good weather didn’t distract! We both traveled a long way to South Zeal, my son from Glasgow and myself from SW France. We spent our days walking on the moor, a place we know well as we previously lived in Sticklepath. The walking brought back many memories and allowed us to share thoughts of Amy wife/his mother who died recently.Everyone we met at the Ox was warm and friendly. The food was good and sustaining. The beer, Merry Monk and Jail Ale, a particular treat for me.I’m sure that my son and I will return again at some point in the future when the irresistible pull of the moor reappears.

What's not to love about The Oxenham Arms? Tons of history, so much to discover, wonderful warm and welcoming staff from the owners down to the bar staff, great bedroom, super comfy bed, tons of hot water and big fluffy towels. Wonderful breakfast, too. Do yourself a favour and treat yourself (and a loved one) to a stay here. You won't regret it!

Stayed here to celebrate our wedding anniversary. The hotel is gorgeous.Originally a monastery in the 11th century; became a pub/hotel in 1477.The bar, restaurant and snug are beautiful and full of history.Charles Dickens stayed here while he was writing The Pickwick Papers.Lord Nelson has been here.David Bowie had lunch here (the food is amazing). It’s a hidden gem in a beautiful medieval village. The staff were welcoming and good fun.The best pub I’ve ever stayed at.Good value.Very comfortable. Highly recommended.

We came for a romantic getaway and had a superb time. Room was magnificent with a four poster bed and views of Dartmoor. The building is just steeped with history and owners are more than happy to give you a tour. Food was excellent with the Duo of Lamb and Pie both great, washed down with some good ales and a bottle of well selected white wine. Loads of walks from the doorstop and great location to do much more. Our ethos was if Lynn (The owner)said we should do it then we did, and that worked extremely well! Great Staff and super stay. Would highly recommend and we’ll be back again!!

Just spent an excellent 3 nights at The Oxenham Arms. They were putting on a classic car and bike show this weekend, to raise money for the local school. This gave added interest to our stay without detracting from the service and quality. Our room was excellent, clean and with a very large four poster, and looked out across the countryside. My full English was great, as were our other meals over the weekend, which included a very nice steak and chips and (not on the same day!) steak and ale pie and on Sunday the full roast. They manage to serve a very wide range of drinks, including real ales and a lot of locally produced spirits - much wider than you'd expect in the average establishment even including Wray and Nephew Jamaican rum and Fireball whisky liqueur, both of which I had a go at!The staff are all really nice and the prices represent good value, especially at a time when we know a lot of places are struggling.Give it a try, I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Great stay in this historic inn. Varied and delicious menu and good range of both wine and beer. Log fire and a warm welcome. Wifi a bit patchy in the bedrooms ( due no doubt to the exceptionally thick walls) but fine in communal areas. This is the second time we have stayed here and it lived up to expectations. Would definitely recommend

The Oxenham Arms is everything one would hope for when booking a hotel. I had a significant Birthday which I didn’t intend to celebrate…just recognise it by a few days away walking on Dartmoor. We hit the jackpot, it became a celebration by virtue of the hospitality we were given. The room was comfortable, spotlessly clean and quiet. The meals were exemplary…catering for my food intolerance perfectly and kindly, nothing was too much trouble. The staff were so professional, yet warm and friendly. We loved how the history of the building was recognised and furnished appropriately, with exactly the right touch. We felt so relaxed and at ease the whole time we were there. The Hotel even offered walking routes locally and onto the Moor. We have found a gem and will certainly be returning.

A very comfortable, well-run hotel dating back to the 13th century and blessed with many historic features. Extremely hospitable couple in charge, nothing was too much trouble for them, and they proved to be a fund of knowledge about the building's history as well as the surrounding region. There is clearly a talented teamwork in the kitchen; the dinner dishes were well above average and showed ambition and skill. The wine list is short but has some good, well-priced bottles, and there are excellent beers on draught in the cosy bar. The bedrooms were full of interesting, quirky features, (such as uneven floors!) but the beds were very comfortable with high-quality linen. The owners create a pleasing sense of informality but in no way does this detract from their exceptional professionalism. Their staff are friendly, efficient and well-trained. Overall, a highly enjoyable and rewarding stay.

This was our third visit to this wonderful find. We decided to change rooms this time having stayed in The Manaton in the past. The Chagford was this year's choice. The biggest four poster bed we've ever seen & very comfortable with beautiful soft furnishings too.Lovely views over Dartmoor from the rear window & the village road from the front. Very quiet at night not a sound to be heard. The food as always was delicious, particularly the pork & gnocchi. The cooked breakfast was just the right size enough to keep you going for the day. Lynne & Simon the owners are very friendly & take time to discuss & suggest day trips around the area.John the barman, waiter & a bit of everything else is a delightful character with the driest sense of humour & great tales of the history of the hotel which is very old & was once a monastery. We couldn't recommend this hotel highly enough & are looking forward to a return visit next year. Thanks for a fabulous stay Lynne,Simon & John.Lauren & Will also deserve a mention too for looking after us at meal times. Hope uni continues going well for Will. Jane & Paul

I have stayed at the Oxenham Arms a few times, and always enjoy the experience. The ambience is just amazing, over a 1000 years of history in this one place. You feel it round every corner whether it be the worn stone floors, the open ancient wooden beams or the most amazing 5000 year old standing stone in the restaurant. The service is outstanding and the food quality amazing. I had the lamb chops, absolutely delicious. The rooms are very comfortable and historic. The bar is great with local beers and even a Devon Single Malt Whisky. The setting in the Devonshire country side is fabulous, a beautiful garden with views as far as the eye can see.You just have to check this place out.

Lovely old building, well cared for and beautifully furnished.Food is excellent, with a good choice of draught beers - we enjoyed the Merrie Monk, brewed by Dartmoor Brewery. We were staying in South Zeal for a conference, and the staff coped well with 44 of us for dinner, all at the same time, on the Saturday evening. The staff were very helpful when we needed an early breakfast, providing something half an hour before the advertised time. There is an 11.00 pm curfew, when the doors are locked, which didn't bother us at all, although some of the others in our group found this most amusing. This is unusual, but the upside was that I was very aware of how quiet and peaceful the hotel was at night, without noisy residents staggering upstairs and banging doors in the early hours.

We spent two nights at the oxenham arms, and loved every minute. We stayed in the lydford room , which was lovely, clean, nice fresh Devon milk on request, when making coffee or tea. The four poster bed, was the most comfortable bed I have ever experienced. The food is of the highest standard, and the service is first class. The garden is exceptional, which amazing views of the moors. We are looking to return in October for three nights, and we can’t wait. A big thank you to Simon , Lyn, and the fantastic John. I honestly could not recommend this hotel enough.

The history behind this unique, stunning hotel is just incredible. You can truly immerse yourself in the past and feel the aura from thousands of years - the summaries really do not do it justice.Warm and welcoming by all staff, a fantastic menu and quality of food you won't be disappointed in any way from steaks to breakfasts. Must try the Scotch Egg! Good selection of local beers and ciders.Beds comfy and a real point of note was how clean this establishment is - you expect a few cobwebs in such an old building but this was immaculate, in all pars of the hotel. Lovely garden with the moors as a backdrop. Planned walks and helpful staff to plan your days with lots of local knowledge. No hesitation in fully recommending the Oxenham Arms, you will not be disappointed!

Spending five nights at the 'Ox' was a delight.Although the hotel is a great stopping-off place for travel to Cornwall, it's an excellent base for exploring Dartmoor and the North and South Devon coasts. It's also a great base for walking; a short walk from the hotel takes you onto the Moor and there are dozens of local walks, all well signposted. We particularly loved the walk from the hotel to Belstone to Sticklepath and then along the Cleave, with a break for afternoon tea in the Old School Room in Belstone. The Hotel's rooms are clean and comfortable, the welcome warm, the building unique and the food excellent. This was our second multi-day stay and we know there will be more!

The wedding of my god-daughter was held at St. Andrew's Church nearby. The reception was at Sticklepath, so the Oxenham Arms Hotel was doubly convenient for both.We arrived on Friday, married on Saturday and departed on Sunday. We enjoyed a delicious supper of steak and salmon both of which were very well presented and tasty. The chardonnay is recommended and the merlot. We slept in the Chagford suite in a four-poster bed.The bathroom has an efficient shower at the touch of a button. There is a courtesy map of local walks which are as long or short as one likes.Read the first chapter of Westward Ho! to get an historic flavour of the inn.Simon and Lynn are welcoming hosts with humour and warmth. Afternoon tea in the rear garden looking towards Dartmoor is recommended. Adequate parking is at the front of the inn, so nose your car up to the flowerbeds at the front of house.Breakfast is a splendid choice ranging from Full English through Poached Eggs (various) to kippers.Enjoy!

Beautiful large landscaped gardens.Nothing is too much trouble.Fantastic rooms with four poster in each. The food is fabulous with a good choice.Breakfast is amazing and relaxed whether for one day or several days... have done both!!Booked again for August for 3 nights. We are so glad we found this gem of accommodation and fine food.Thank you Simon and Lynne

Stayed here as part of our coast to coast cycle ride, rooms were comfortable and well appointed. Everything about the Oxenham Arms is historically very very old so all rooms are rather dark and full of atmosphere. We enjoyed our stay and our meals in the pub were first class. Secure storage was also provided for our bikes which wasappreciated .

From the moment we pulled up outside we knew we were in for a treat. The History of the building is intriguing from that very moment. Made to feel very welcome Simon & Lyn. Sadly only had one night here but visited the kitchen to compliment the chef after dinner (I never do that). Our 4 poster gave us both the best nights sleep we've had in forever. Managed to squeeze in one of the many walks possible directly from The Oxenham in the morning which was also stunning. Can't fault our experience at all, we will definitely be back.

What a find the Oxenham Arms Hotel really is. We stopped here on the way down to Cornwall and are so glad that we did. The owners Simon and Lyn are wonderful as is the accommodation (and four poster bed), food and service. The history of this place is amazing and it was really good to find an owner that new so much about the buildings history, history that you can touch in every nook and cranny from the ancient standing stone that is centre-piece to the building to the old walls of the monastery. In essence we really enjoyed our night there and will book again.

Beautiful inn in a picture postcard Devon village set in rolling countryside. Very friendly hosts, especially John who doubled as bar man and waiter. Gorgeous ancient bar with log fire and same in dining area. Excellent food especially the perfectly cooked fish and chips. Four poster bed comfy and room very quaint. Great breakfast. Only fault is tiny en-suite and overall inn was a bit chilly but to be expected in such an old place and did not detract from our stay. Wonderful really!

We had an amazing evening in the main bar, there are so many social rooms, small snugs etc but the action was in the bar with a great little karaoke by the fireplace, perfect for our 2022 photos of us looking our best, or maybe not by midnight 🤔. What an awesome stay we will certainly return soon. Ask for a four poster bedroom they are just lovely 😍Very Many thanks to our hosts.

The rooms are clean and comfortable and the owners were very welcoming. Now on to the food- simply Devine and good portion sizes, moreover also at a reasonable price (£100 for a three course meals, drinks and wine included) We were so impressed we are going back. Welcoming & Friendly hosts, lovely historic building and rooms with great food!!The owners are clearly passionate about their property and business, arrived late and starving after lunchtime kitchen close, but they sorted us with a tasty chesseboard and nibbles and 1/2 bottle of my favorite tipple - Port. The beds were super comfortable and the the linen top quality and our bath/shower was a delight with proper pressure!Apperently thay were short staffed? But you would'nt know it as the service and attention to detail were spot on...unlike the other 4 properties we stayed at during our West country trip.If you are COVID concious - they take it seriously with masks being essential between your room and table. I detest wearing a mask and did not find this a hardship.

Wonderful setting within a small village, Ideal for walkers, the hotel even provides guides for various local walks with all the information of what to expect/encounter, tastefully decorated given given limitations of a grade II building. Excellent food, friendly staff, this is how a small hotel should be run. The only negative is the very limited parking on the hotel grounds.

The Oxenham Arms is housed in a building of fascinating historical provenance, and it has been tactfully and sensitively renovated to preserve that history. But it is far from a relic.Friendly and courteous staff, rooms furnished and dressed to a high quality, good food and drink - all add up to a relaxed and easy atmosphere and a very comfortable place to stay.Nestling in the picturesque Dartmoor village of South Zeal, the hotel is ideally placed for walking and further explorations of the northern moor and settlements.Strongly recommended.

Travelling as a group of 4 adults we have just returned home from the Oxenham Arms after a two night stay and have only praise for the high standards of accommodation, food and cheerful staff. We loved the old building which started life as a monastery in the 12th century and later became a public house from the 15th cent.Highly recommended.

Was so pleased to find this lovely hotel while driving along the A30. I arrived late and the owners were very friendly and helpful. The room was spotless and steeped in history, as was the hotel as a whole. I'm not often passing, but it's on my radar now and I would highly recommend it to anyone. Great breakfast too!

We had a pleasant two day stay in this very interesting old building. Everything ran well, even though Covid was causing some staffing problems. Our only problem was the two high steps into the Widecombe room which were not easy for elderly knees.

Found by chance for one night en route to Cornwall. Despite the obvious age of the premises everything worked and we were very comfy. The steps into the Widecombe room were challenging for ancient hips and knees, but we fathomed a way to cope. Dinner most enjoyable both as to cooking and service. Great breakfast and we went merrily on our way. South Zeal seemed like a secret village which added to the fun.

The inn has great charm and history enhanced by the welcome and comfort received from mine hosts Simon and Lynn.To stay in a room that had seen many greats such as Charles Dickens added to the experience. We were pleased that the comfort level and facilities had been carefully modernised! A very comfortable four-poster bed.Dinner was very good and well presented under the watchful eye of Lynn. Also, we thoroughly enjoyed the time spent in the bar with Simon and interesting locals.Certainly, we will be back.

This was our second visit to this little gem of a hotel.Lynne & Simon our hosts made us feel very welcome & remembered us from 2 years ago. John was his usual chatty self with many tales to tell! Our room Manaton was extremely comfortable with an amazing four poster bed making a great night's sleep. The village was very quiet with hardly any traffic the sound of horses hooves a joy to hear. Now for the food.Every meal we had was delicious. The best creme brulee we have ever tasted & the beer braised belly pork was scrumptious too. We can't wait for our next visit. Thank you for a fantastic 4 days.

Just had two nights staying in the Lustleigh room, its simply stunning and steeped in history. Lyn, Simon, John and the rest of the very well run team were welcoming friendly and offered plenty of sound advice on the surrounding areas. I cannot fault this beautiful gem of an establishment and will definitely be returning.

My wife and I and two friends spent three nights at the hotel. We were wowed from the moment we stepped inside. Beautiful cosy atmosphere full of character and history. Staff were welcoming, friendly and helpful and the breakfasts and dinners were excellent. We had a four poster bedroom which was very cosy and charming, just right for what we needed. There is a lovely outside space too if you wanted drinks or meals outside. We would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone.

We recently enjoyed 2 nights at The Oxenham Arms , Lynn and Simon are the perfect hosts in a hotel and restaurant with a perfect setting. The views from the garden at the rear of the hotel are spectacular and there are some great walks nearby suitable for all ages and levels of fitness. The breakfast and evening meals were very tasty and served in one of the historic restaurant rooms. We would definitely recommend a visit and will ensure we return when we are next in Devon Thank you to the whole helpful and friendly team at The Oxenham Arms

We first stayed here 35 years ago - what a change! Our room was beautifully decorated with embroidered hangings over an enormous and very comfortable bed. The bathroom was well designed but there were occasional interruptions to the water in the shower! The dinners and breakfast were delicious - very fresh and very tasty. The staff were delightful - friendly and efficient and we loved the bar. We will return!

Lyn got balloons for the table in the evening all at an extremely good price. Our room was exceptional with an extremely comfortable bed. The hotel is full of character with all the necessities of modern living. We ate solely in the hotel and the food was magnificent. Couldn’t recommend this establishment more highly.

We stayed at the Oxenham Arms for a four night break on route to join family in North Devon. We stayed in the "Bovey Room" which was nicely decorated - we felt that the bed needed a new mattress as you could feel the springs in places, however, it was still comfortable and olde worldy! The food was excellent - a huge, beautifully cooked and presented breakfast and we had two evening meals and couldn`t fault the food - the restaurant manager was really friendly and professional and made guests feel welcome. The garden was a bonus - huge, with lots of tables, chairs and parasols and looked out over beautiful countryside.Parking is very restricted in front of the hotel, although there is a car park around the corner - we were lucky to be able to get a space either in front of the hotel (where there are about 4 or 5 spaces) or in the road where there are no restrictions. There are walks directly from the hotel - but beware, it is very hilly! All in all a very nice stay in this lovely, very old hotel.

Lovely attentive staff, calm surroundings and quirky rooms. The food is fabulous and if the weather is kind, the pub garden is beautiful! For a couple who love to walk straight from the hotel door, this is always our go-to place to stay.Sketchy, intermittent internet service from our room (Chagford) but not too much of an issue for us.Rooms are well equipped and clean. We’ll be back soon!

Family-run in set in north Dartmoor village that is itself historically, this hotel started out as a prehistoric site, then medieval religious house, then manor house and coaching inn, all evident in its structure. It has welcomed illustrious national figures over the centuries fromDickens to David Bowie and is full of curious nooks, curios and books relating to national and regional culture. The hostsand amiable staff provide high quality cuisine suitable for most diets and standard of accommodation although issues of adaptation to the building may give some accessibility issues. It is important to try to plan to at least book a night here if you are in the area.

Lovely hotel in a quiet location. The staff were friendly, room & bed were clean and comfortable as expected and if you sense them, the spirits were friendly & no concern! Couldn't fault the evening meal & service. Breakfast orders are taken in writing on the evening before so we expected it to be correct when served but one Breakfast had to be returned twice. That's a minor criticism for an otherwise really enjoyable stay & would stay again in the future.

The Oxenham Arms has real character and a sense of a history going back a long way. The food was superb and we worked our way through the menu. We stayed in the Lydford Suite and slept soundly in the most comfortable four poster bed. There are lovely walks from the hotel and well-written guides are available. The Oxenham Arms is a wonderful, historic hotel and very comfortable in a good setting. We received a warm welcome from everyone and really enjoyed our stay. The food was always excellent and well-presented. Our bed was one of the most comfortable we have ever slept in and the room itself and the hotel were very clean. For most of our stay we had to use the village car park because the parking space at the hotel was very limited. Managed though to park our car in the car park for our final night. A big thank you to everyone concerned at the hotel for a lovely stay.

We enjoyed our recent stay at Oxenham Arms.A minor criticism would be our second morning breakfast when we had the kippers which had a very odd flavour and were very greasy, neither of us liked them.I would also like to make a suggestion to your desert menu. Most of your resident guests were a similar age to us and we don’t really want the heavy deserts so at this time of the year why not put fresh strawberries and Devonshire clotted cream on the menu? As visitors to Devon we really want to enjoy local produce ,so again try and include this in your menu— keep it simple and limited but good quality, local and fresh.

A very pleasant experience.Booked in for a 4 day stay on a Thursday to get a very pleasant and humorous introduction by John to our Widecombe room with its 4 ft door way. Tapas dinner that evening was busy and seem short staffed! Very good and generous options on breakfasts but could have done with a refill of coffee or tea. Great range of beers and gins and the house Sauvignon Blanc was excellent. We had a range of dinners and they were sensible portions, very good and tasty. We know they were struggling with chefs and staff but over all it was a very relaxed and pleasant experience in both the classic oak beamed and snug bar, and the historic dining rooms. Despite the weather (chilly for late June) we did enjoy the garden out the back with its splendid character views of the moors. Parking is on the village high street and is simple and secure. It’s well signed from the main A road and has good WiFi . Anybody over 6 ft tall will need to learn to duck or ‘grouse’ as the historic building has some very low doorways as expected of such an ancient hotel; that’s reality.

I had perfect time in South Zeal, staying in Oxenham Arms for a couple of nights. It's a lovely place in rural area, historical building surrounded by rolling hills and green pastures. An amazing spot for a relaxing weekend or holidays, quiet and comfortable. Room we were accommodated in was on a smaller side, the majority of space taken by a massive four-poster bed. Bathroom is also ofquite modest size however spotless clean.Menu in downstairs restaurant is short but every single dish is perfect. Whether you prefer fish and chips or wild mushroom ravioli you will be satisfied. Wine list is impressive yet easy to read and includes a couple of house whites and reds. Staff is made of lovely and friendly people, happy to chat if not super busy. You may expect 30/40 mins of wait for your main to arrive which would be irritating in some places but I personally didn't mind. The dining room is such a pleasant place to be, with original decor kept in style with the character of the old monastery. If you are lucky in the garden you may catch a glimpse of the resident cats, sheep and geese. Make sure to take time to admire impressive views when having a pint in the garden.

We picked the Oxenham Arms because we love old traditional pub/hotels. Although only living in Cornwall an hour away we opted to stay 24:hours in Devon. This hotel was an absolute delight dripping in history, antiques and the most comfortable bed and duvets. The garden overlooking the countryside to Dartmoor was so relaxing on a peaceful warm day, Dartmoor aleand a good glass of wine in hand. Our evening meal was delicious, husbands steak cooked perfectly, my local cheese choice as a main also delicious. We will come again to stay in the lovely village of South Zeal and use it as a base for exploring more of Devon. As the menu was unchanged during our stay, perhaps a specials board would be a good idea.Staff were quite stretched as the number of diners was at capacity, but managed this pleasantly. This is an historically unique hotel with a fantastic beer garden, an impressive selection of gins, and a lovely ambience.Highly recommended.

However what really impressed me was the fact that when I walked in unexpectedly and there were no guests the staff were still wearing their masks, they werent just for show. Also they said they would lock our bikes away and they did even though it was out of their normal routine. I must add that the crumble is to die for, I didnt know it could taste like that!

The breakfasts were fantastic as were the evening meals with a great menu and choice of restaurant rooms. All the Staff were attentive and very friendly. A special thank you to Simon, Lyn and John for making our stay so pleasant. If I could improve anything it would be to have a lounge area by the fire where you could sit and read the paper. However we spent a good deal of time walking on the Moor as there are a lot of walks to do in the area. The hotel is very central to the coast and the moors so there is plenty to keep you occupied. My partner loves cars so we visited the Moretonhamstead Motor museum which is a gem.

There are not enough words to describe this place and it's wonderful people. We were made to feel very welcome and very special. Nothing was too much trouble. The food was top notch, it looked like it had come straight from a master chef kitchen, and tasted even better. Better actually than I have eaten in a Michelin starred restaurant. Simon, Lin and every single one of their team are some of the nicest people you will ever meet, not just professional, but genuinely caring. Thank you all for a wonderful weekend. Our recommendation if you arereading this, go to the Oxenham Arms, it will knock the spots off anywhere else you've ever been. Five stars is not enough but there aren't any more to tick.

My initial telephone call to the hotel when I spoke to Lyn set the standard for the quality of our stay.We arrived too early to check in but had the most amazing welcome from a young lady called Ella who served us our food and drink and seemed genuinely interested in our conversation with her.We sat in the bar for 3 hours and were impressed with Ella's friendly personality as well as her efficiency in dealing with everything. Our room (Belstone) had lovely views of Dartmoor and the most comfortable superking bed imaginable. We had a tasty meal in the snug in the evening in front of the log fire. The banana parfait dessert was as good as any fine dining restaurant in terms of taste and presentation. My husband adored his fillet steak with brie. After a wonderful night's sleep, we had a delicious breakfast before setting off for home. The history of this hotel is fascinating and the staff created such an atmosphere of friendliness and comfort that we intend to return for a longer stay next year to enjoy more of the area.

My husband and I have just returned from a fantastic 3 night break at this lovely ‘old’ pub and restaurant run by husband and wife team, Lyn & Simon Powell. The building is ancient, steeped in history, all wonky floors, wood panelling and rich textiles and a roaring fire in the open hearth in the bar. All the staff are characters, with special mention for John and new girl, Tara who both made our stay very special. The COVID-19 hygiene regime was taken seriously, but not heavy handedly! We felt safe and protected by it. We were celebrating our Ruby Wedding Anniversary and enjoyed some delicious food, great wines and witty banter. We have stayed at the pub a few times in the past and have always had a wonderful time.I recommend The Chagford bedroom, with dual aspects you can fully appreciate the Moreland views. The large room is dominated by a king size four poster bed draped in fabulous rich shades of deep red on the curtains and bedspread and has a nice bathroom with bath and shower. Their full English breakfast will certainly keep you going right through till supper time.Take yourself off to the beauty of Devon, the pub is in easy reach of Tavistock, Okehampton and you can reach either coast in little over an hours drive, and the moors on your doorstep .... fabulous!

With everything going on in the world, we booked a last minute weekend break away to this lovely country hotel and restaurant. We stayed in the Lustleigh Room (where Charles Dickens stayed and wrote The Pickwick Papers in what is now the en-suite bathroom). The room is a good size with uneven floors and thick walls. The wardrobe is built in and is very spacious. The bathroom is up a couple of steps and lovely and modern. You can hear noise from the bar downstairs as this room is directly above. However, due to current COVID restrictions, it was quiet by 10pm.The food here is fabulous. No complaints on either night we stayed. Breakfasts are cooked to order too.In the visitor information booklet in your room there are leaflets on local walks. We used one of these – Walk 4 Black Tor, Black-a-TorCopse and Meldon Reservoir.A fabulous walk, however, make sure you have decent walking boots as it is quite steep when scrambling down over the rocks and bouldersfrom Black Tor, slippery when walking through the copse and marshy and wet when walking back towards the reservoir (you need to be quite high up to avoid these areas). Thoroughly enjoyed this walk.Very COVID safe. QR code situated by the door for track and trace. Masks worn by all visitors and staff. A lovely weekend. Thanks to all involved.

Excellent food and drink. Really nice room with four-poster bed which despite being around since the time of Charles Dickens was exceptionally comfy. My only negative comment is that the landlady got really stroppy when we put some coal on the fire in the bar - she stated that as it was 9pm and the bar had to shut at 10pm it wasn't worth it - did she really expect us to sit there and shiver for an hour?Shame as this incident spoilt what was otherwise a really good visit.

This hotel is perfect. Literally; from the friendly locals and staff, great food, pleasantly old surroundings and the ridiculously comfortable 4 poster bed.We absolutely will be back. I honestly dare someone to find something wrong with this beautiful place. As a self confessed Tudorphile, I felt like I had stepped back in time.We hope to see you soon!

You have a beautiful hotel with a lovely ambience and your staff are a credit to you.We were made very welcome on our arrival by the barman who maintained a jovial and light-hearted disposition for our whole stay.He made us feel as if were special guests, important to him, and always had a 'jolly' quip upon seeing us!In the most part the food was very nice and well presented although the breakfast kipper was of the 'boil in the bag type' which I would not have expected in an establishment of your quality? But that said, we enjoyed our stay and would have no reservations about staying again.

Relaxed from the moment we arrived. Friendly, obliging service; warm, comfortable room with huge fourposter bed; top quality meals especially in evening. There are plenty of walks of all distances, either along footpaths and lanes or up on the moor, from the hotel itself and further afield or just relax in the garden. Just a pity we don't live closer!

Thank-you to you all for making us so welcome. Such a friendly atmosphere with equally friendly guests staying whilst we were with you. Poppy and Lois send their licks... they loved all the attention in the bar !! ????. We’ll be back. Thanks... Andy & Alina.

Thank you to Lynne, Simon, John and all the team. You have such a unique property with a great atmosphere. We stayed for two nights with two rooms, the Chagford and Bovey. Both rooms were lovely.Special mention of the really "crisp and fresh" bedding, really noticeable quality. We dined at The Oxenham both nights and all the meals were really good, perfectly cooked steak! When you ask for very rare and actually get it plus it’s not cold...delicious!The team really made our stay, we did enjoy a bit of personality and fun from everyone, watch out for John and his quick whit, always makes us laugh! Good to see you all again and we felt very comfortable with screens in place and hand sanitiser at strategic point in the building. See you again on the way back from Cornwall, a great place to break our journey.

Booked the Lustleigh suite for one night as we love Dartmoor and wanted a romantic evening to ourselves. We were warmly welcomed upon our arrival and shown to our room which is absolutely lovely; the links to Charles Dickens are particularly inspiring and it is amazing to think that he was writing 180 years ago in what is now the en-suite bathroom. There is period furniture (including an open four-poster), stylish bathroom, ample storage and a decent selection of tea/coffee.Once settled in, we went down to the bar and acquainted ourselves with the superb selection of beers, spirits (gins), ales and wine. We also met some of the staff and owners who couldn’t have been more friendly, polite and helpful. Once we had purchased our drinks, we retired to the garden area to enjoy the beautiful plants, resident livestock and the foreboding presence of Cosdon Beacon overlooking all.As resident guests, we automatically received a table booking for our evening meal although we were advised that, if we had wanted a specific time to dine, it would have been prudent to notify them in advance. This became apparent as, despite visiting on a Tuesday evening in early September, it was relatively busy so I would ensure you take note of this prior to your stay. The menu selection is quite diverse and affords an interesting interpretation of pub/bistro regulars largely made with local seasonal produce at competitive prices. We began with the artisan bread and olive oil/balsamic and a plate of olives with sun-dried tomatoes which were very tasty. I then ordered the fish and chips whilst my fiancée (vegetarian) opted for the butternut squash ravioli. Both dishes were generous, well-presented and absolutely delicious; I’m struggling to think of a time that I have had a better fish supper. Truly superb. The service was quick, efficient and very attentive. After dinner, we went up to our room to retire for the evening. Unfortunately, one of the bulbs had blown in a bedside lamp, but this was swiftly replaced with the minimum of fuss. I also requested the use of a fan (I am a sweaty ginger; the room would not normally be considered overly warm) which was delivered similarly fast. Again, faultless service. We have had a brilliant evening and I have no doubt that breakfast tomorrow morning will be of a similarly high standard. Especial praise must go to Lucy behind the bar who, despite being a recent arrival to the hospitality team, demonstrated great humour, determination and efficiency; she should be extremely proud of the excellent service she provided. We would highly recommend the Oxenham Arms; a truly lovely hostelry in wonderful surroundings.

This small hotel was exactly what we were looking for. Despite being busy in the bar and the restaurant we received a warm and friendly welcome. The room was beautifully decorated and clean and the bed was very comfortable. The food was too a very high standard and very tasty. The beetroot salad with haloumi was one of the best vegetarian dishes I have eaten for a long time. My husband had steak and ale pie which was packed with steak and a crispy fluffy pastry. Breakfast is cooked to order which is always a bonus when eating on hotels. We really enjoyed our stay and can't wait to go back. We would definitely recommend this hotel.

As far as I was concerned the hotel got 10/10 on almost everything. Large white fluffy towels, quilt lavatory paper, bottled water in room, as well as plenty of tea and coffee making items. Also plenty of space in the bedroom for storing clothes etc., and a dressing table. The dining room is also excellent, fruit juices and grapefruit pieces for breakfast and the dinners were really something to remember. All the staff were very helpful, nothing was too much trouble. The only thing I did not like was having to share a pot of tea at breakfast as I like mine weak and three cups, whereas my friend liked his strong, and I prefer a better choice of tea than typhoo.I would like to return one day.

From the onset of our visit we were awestruck by the 11th century building, with it’s 2ft thick walls and ancient beams. The proprietors have restored this old coaching inn with great integrity. It’s a building that you want to explore. We were lucky enough to stay in what was probably the Abbott’s cell, which was beautifully decorated with excellent facilities.Lyn and Simon were lovely hosts and the food was delicious, they have a superb chef. All this is set in a quiet valley beneath the hills of Dartmoor. What more could you want.

We selected this hotel for a nice quite night away and with its cosy bar and log fire it was just the ticket. The staff have to be the friendliest I have come across in any of the many hotels I have stayed in. The room was very oldie worldie as my wife put it (Just what she wanted) and very comfortable as well. The food was just as excellent as everything else and we are looking forward to returning for a weekend later in the year.

As usual a delightful environment, marvellous atmosphere for a winters break. Very friendly and welcoming service, particularlyfrom th young man seeing to our luggage and tending the bar. A few small improvements to bring it up to a five star experience. The light over the bathroom sink did not work , the toilet roll holder was positioned in a way to limit access to contortionists, and a second easy chair would have been appreciated for sitting later in the evening. But these are minor points in an otherwise enjoyable experience.

A two night stay on our tour of Devon in this quaint and ancient hostelry. We were made so welcome on our arrival. Situated on the edge of Dartmoor this establishment oozes (very) old age charm and total tranquility. The cream tea we had was without doubt the best we had ever had and the breakfasts and dinners in the restaurant can only be described as superb and imaginative.I just wish we could could have stayed longer.Oh yes - the resident cats are a delight!!

The Oxenham Arms is full of character & history, and the building reflects this - thick, granite walls, heavy oak ceiling beams, lots of different levels. Our bed & pillows were very comfortable, lovely room, and clean en-suite shower room, albeit a bit cramped. If you have problems with knees or hips, the big steps in the building are a challenge, some of them being about 12 inches/30cm deep. I was disappointed with the gardens as the hotel was described as being in "4 acres of grounds". To me, grounds means accessible gardens of the hotel, not a small farm. The 4 acres are divided into about 3 hilly paddocks with sheep, horses and geese. The garden itself for guests is quite steep with stone steps without a handrail, and there are several wooden picnic tables. The only meal we had was breakfast and it was excellent and service so quick. The landlord, Simon, is a very welcoming man, and another man who met us on arrival loved telling us all the history of the place. I would highly recommend it - but be warned about the steps!

We stayed in the Belstone room for our anniversary. The bed is the feature of the room - huge, crisp, comfortable and all-imposing. The room is clean as a whistle and the night comes pouring in through the diamond-paned windows thick and dark and silent. We had an enormous breakfast, cheerfully and efficiently served, and the breakfast room completely captures the age and character of the whole ancient inn. It is a unique place - granite, timber and warmth of spirit. Anyone would love it here.

Returned to celebrate Martins birthday-family joined us for a surprise meal & then the 2 of us stayed 3 nights. It is always lovely to come back & see our friends Lyn, Simon & the Team again to a warm welcome & John's humour ;-) adding to the charm. Stayed in Lydford room, not stayed in before-beautiful, comfortable & peaceful. Geoff & team continue to produce exception food, with a menu to suit all. Recommend to any adults who want a treat or want to spend a quiet break away from it all in a pretty village. We have been coming here since Lyn & Simon took it on and we will be back again, they are doing a wonderful job! Thank you. XX

We researched all of our planned stays over our 2 week road trip through the UK. We had expected the Oxenham Arms to be impressive but this place is next level. History in every room, fantastic food & friendly staff who can’t do enough for you, we slept in the monks room in the old monastery section and once up our stone stairs and ducking to enter through the door we were in a world of our own. Don’t hesitate to stay here, highly recommend.

I count myself a very lucky man to have found the Oxenham Arms. Stayed here for three nights while on business near Tavistock. I was immediately struck by the friendly welcome and even more charmed by the history of the place. No bits of wood stuck on the ceilings here to add character, this is the genuine article. The room was clean and tidy and the en-suite as modern and efficient as could be. Normally on such a trip I might eat in only on the first night, but so good was the food that it never occurred to me to go elsewhere, and all served with the right combination of easy going cheerfulness and efficiency. Just superb, all of it. Often, as you leave a hotel you say something along the lines of 'hope to be back soon.' This time I really meant it.

A most interesting place to stay for a break – intriguing very old building, welcoming and considerate owner-managers Simon and Lyn and staff, delicious dinner and breakfast and a very comfortable, freshly redecorated room (The Belstone). The ghost in our room was as accommodating as the owners and did nothing to make us feel anything other than welcome. The unusually cold spell made any lengthy walk in the pretty countryside an unappealing prospect – but we left with the thought that a 3-mile local ramble in the Spring or Summer next year might be an excellent idea!

Book if you want to eat here, just in case it is busy (as it seems it is)!We stayed 2 nights in a very comfortable and clean bedroom with a great breakfast for reasonable cost, but as there are only 7 bedrooms again it is best to book!Service was excellent from a happy staff and beers wine and food of great quality.Be sure to see the standing stones built into the walls - one of which is about 4000 years old.If asked "Would I go again?" the reply would be not just "Yes" but "Yes I would really like to!"

We were fortunate enough to find this wonderful hotel where we stayed for two nights in late April 18. With a very warm welcome from Simon, the proprietor I immediately felt at home. we were given the Lydford room and although the bathroom was a tad on the small size it certainly did not impact on our stay. The room itself was lovely with the most beautiful large four poster you can imagine, so comfortable and quiet.Dinner did not disappoint, and with lively conversation with John at the bar we had the most pleasant evening.Breakfast was spot on with a great choice and great coffee !!We found everyone so friendly and the actual hotel packed with history.
