The Oxenham Arms - The Oldest Pub in The World

The Oxenham Arms claim to be the oldest pub in the world

The current general definition of the oldest pub in the UK (not the world ) is below, produced originally by Dr. David Cross who has extensively researched the subject of the oldest pub in the UK.  We agree this to be the most accurate definition. The definition is..

"The oldest building which is currently a pub (or Inn) and has the oldest history of being a pub (or Inn), where a significant part of the original above-ground structure still exists as part of the existing building”.

Background

The Guinness book of Records used to hold a classification for The Oldest Pub in the UK, various contenders for this including pubs in London, Nottingham and St Albans made claims.

However recent research and findings, including those recorded in Dr. David Cross's findings have proved that either the dates could not be confirmed, the actual age of the buildings were not as old as they were supposed to be, the connection with the oldest date was so tenuous that the pub could not honestly have claimed to have been a pub.

One pub, in Ireland, claimed that it was serving ale in around 950AD, when in fact all that been established was that one part of one interior wall was made of wattle and daub, dated by experts  at around 950AD.

So the questions that arise when trying to determine whether your local pub, who may have a sign up saying "The OIdest Pub..." , based on the elements within Dr. Cross' definition would are listed below, beneath that, The Oxenham Arms' response on each point

The oldest property which is currently a pub (or Inn) and has the oldest history of being a pub (or Inn), where a significant part of the original above-ground structure still exists as part of the original dwelling.

-The oldest property which is currently a pub (or Inn).

-Has the oldest history of being a pub (or Inn).

-A significant part of the original above-ground structure still exists as part of the original dwelling.

All parish records show that our “oldest building” was the Benedictine Monastery Hospital with a construction date of 1225. (note. In the year 1225, the Benedictine Monks, who under theorder of St. Benedict were themselves allowed to brew, drink and providealcohol, would have been doing so in the form of m ead and ale both for medicinal and for pleasure purposes).

However, the building was constructed around a prehistoric Neolithic pagan ceremonial stone which still supports the centre of the building. In section 2 we provide evidence that this stone was used as a ceremonial location where alcohol was produced andconsumed, around 5000 years ago. This predates other pubs and inns claims to be the oldest pub by around 4000 years.

An example reference to thedrinking of alcohol and feasts that occurred in these times is as below from English Heritage

The oldest history of being a pub (or Inn)

All parish records show that the building first became an Inn in the year 1477

(note. As above In section 2 we provide evidence that this stone was used as a ceremonial location where alcohol was produced and consumed, around 5000 years ago.

Where a significant part of the original above ground structure still exists as part of the existing building.

The most significant part of our original above ground structure is the prehistoric monolith standing stoneof Neolithic origins and date. Even ignoring the other two parts of thedefinition, this definition places the Oxenham Arms 4000 years before any otherdated parts of other pub buildings in the UK and Ireland.

(note. As an example, thereis a bar in Ireland with a claim to be the oldest bar in Ireland and also all of the UK. The claim is made because whilst the bar and building is clearly not very old, when some work was done onthe building, some internal walls were discovered to be made of wattle and dauband this walling was dated at around 970AD. The bar makes the assertion that there is some proof that alcohol was being served from that wattle and daub walling section of the Irish bar !)

As we previously describe above parish records show that our “oldest building” was the BenedictineMonastery Hospital with a construction date of 1225 around the Neolithic monolith. In both periods of history, Neolithic and 11 Century, The Supplyof Alcohol would have formed a major part of the activities taking place.

Indeed, even by todays 2014Licencing Laws, the law refers to the sale supply of alcohol and so if in reading the textbelow in section to you concur with us, namely that in Neolithic Prehistoric South Zeal and 11 Century South Zeal, alcohol was being suppliedfrom this place, then you must agree that The Oxenham Arms is The Oldest Pub inThe World.
