About us - The Oxenham Arms at South Zeal

The Oxenham Arms Hotel and Restaurant is a Grade II* Heritage England Listed Building.

A former monastery constructed around a massive prehistoric hand carved granite standing stone.

In April 2012 the freehold building and grounds of approximately 5 acres were purchased by Simon & Lyn Powell.

The business is privately owned, freehold and a traditional free house inn and hotel.

The Oxenham Arms is the oldest CAMRA Heritage Pub in Devon & Cornwall

The "Ox" as the building is affectionately known by most people in England has been a hotel since 1854 and an Inn since the year 1477.

When purchased by Simon and Lyn in 2012 the building required a lot of restoration and in 2012 the owners before re-opening the hotel rewired, re-plumbed , redecorated and brand new public and guest hotel  bath and shower roomed installed along with a completely new hotel central heating system and alarm systems.

In the guest hotel rooms, bar and restaurants, every piece of fabric including curtains, bedding and chair coverings, bedspreads and four poster bed coverings were then painstakingly hand made and hand sewn by a local Devon seamstress, in exactly the way they would have been in the 14th Century.

The enormous heritage pattern English oak Bylaw Oak Four Poster beds were restored, each bedframe with a value of around £12000 and new pocket sprung mattresses installed throughout.

The Oxenham Arms reopened to the Public on June 2nd 2012 to mark The Queens Silver Jubilee.

Only the bar was open until the end July when our Catering Team was recruited after refurbishing the commercial kitchen.

In 2013 John Davis our Front of House Manager joined the team followed by Maria Weir heading up our Restaurant Service Team.

In our kitchen we employ three full time chefs plus a breakfast chef and 4 commis and KP plus other staff.

Our foods are all cooked to order and locally sourced with many items coming from less than five miles away.

In 2016 we were awarded 4 Gold Stars and the AA Dinner Service Award.

Our five acres of grounds and pet animals are looked after by our head gardener Gillian Hazledean and our head groundsman Phil Wedlake

Today we have a total team of 18 looking after this beautiful building. Any profits we make from alcohol, food and hotel room sales are ploughed back into the maintenance of this unique and incredible old building.

When visiting the Oxenham Arms, you are helping us to support and maintain one of the most beautiful  ancient buildings in England
